Babu, an educated young man, arrives in a rural coastal village as the new secretary of a co-operative coir society. He soon meets Achamma, a hard-working, virtuous village girl who supports her blind father, Mathew, by making coir ropes. Touched by her simplicity and grace, Babu falls in love with Achamma and promises to marry her. However, local coir worker Chacko, who has faithfully assisted Mathew for years, also holds deep affection for Achamma and hopes to marry her.
Trouble arises when Babu's wealthy father, Varkey, strongly opposes his son marrying a poor coir worker, insisting that Babu marry a woman of equal financial standing. Meanwhile, malicious gossip spreads through the village. Matters take a tragic turn when a devastating fire erupts in Mathew's house. Chacko heroically dives into the blaze to save Mathew and his coir materials, resulting in severe burn injuries that leave Chacko blind.
Profoundly moved by Chacko's selfless sacrifice, Achamma realizes the depth of his devotion. She chooses to set aside her personal happiness with Babu to care for Chacko for the rest of her life. Recognizing her noble resolve, Babu and his family come to respect her decision, leaving Babu to honor her sacrifice as Achamma stays devotedly beside Chacko.
