Set against the backdrop of the 1944–1946 political struggle in Travancore, the story follows revolutionary leaders Ravi and Mammootty as they mobilize poor farmers and laborers against oppressive rule and land exploitation. Following a violent police crackdown that includes burning down worker settlements and issuing arrest warrants, both leaders are forced into hiding. Their wives, Sharada and Nabeesa, endure severe poverty, social hostility, and persistent police intimidation while struggling to raise their young children.
Madhu, an opportunistic acquaintance who secretly harbors inappropriate feelings towards Sharada, offers superficial aid to manipulate her. Meanwhile, local merchant Qasim Pillai attempts to exploit Nabeesa's dire financial situation. When police surround Nabeesa's house, Mammootty surrenders to shield his wife from harassment. In prison, Mammootty and his fellow activists endure harsh torture but remain unyielding in their commitment to the movement.
While underground, Ravi writes a poignant manuscript titled 'Palunku' detailing the sacrifices of working-class families. Desperate for fame, Madhu steals the manuscript and publishes it under a pseudonym, eventually winning a prestigious award. Sharada and Nabeesa struggle through starvation, but Sharada maintains her dignity and rejects Madhu's advances. Later, Madhu's theft is exposed when Ravi's authorship is proven. With political amnesty declared, Ravi, Mammootty, and other political prisoners are released from jail, reuniting with their families amid widespread public rejoicing.
