The film follows the interconnected lives of nine Black women living in New York City. Each woman corresponds to one of the "Ladies" from Shange's original choreopoem, represented by a color. A social worker, Kelly Watkins (Kerry Washington), the Lady in Blue, visits the brownstone of Crystal Wallace (Kimberly Elise), the Lady in Brown, to check on the welfare of her children.
