Ben Shockley, an alcoholic Phoenix police detective, is assigned to extradite witness Augustina "Gus" Mally from Las Vegas. His superior, Commissioner Edgar Blakelock, remarks that she is a "nothing witness" for a "nothing trial". Upon meeting Mally, he finds that she is a belligerent prostitute with mob ties who is convinced that she and Shockley are being set up.
